HSBC announces Michael Schleef as CEO, Germany

HSBC announces today that Dr. Michael Schleef will become the new head of its business in Germany from July 1.

Michael Schleef joined HSBC Germany in 2021. He is currently responsible for HSBC's Commercial Banking business for Germany and Austria where he has focused on the business with internationally oriented medium-sized companies in Germany (the German “Mittelstand”).

“Michael Schleef has been a key driver of growth and transformation at HSBC Germany over the past two years. The German corporate customer market is now one of the five largest and most important for HSBC globally", said Andrew Wild, CEO of HSBC Continental Europe. “Michael will continue to focus on this and further advance HSBC Germany as we become the leading wholesale bank for international clients in Europe.”

Michael Schleef as CEO, Germany

Before joining HSBC, Michael worked for around 20 years in various management positions at Deutsche Bank.

As CEO of HSBC Germany, he will continue to lead the Commercial Banking business and also become a member of the Executive Committee of HSBC Continental Europe. Michael replaces Nicolo Salsano, who is leaving the bank to pursue another opportunity.

HSBC Germany will also take the next step on the way to be part of the European platform. The business in Germany, the largest economy in Europe with the highest level of exports, will be integrated into HSBC Continental Europe. Assets, customer base and the employees of HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt GmbH are thus transferred to HSBC Continental Europe SA, Germany.

After the transfer, the management board of HSBC Germany will be replaced by an Executive Committee. This Committee will be led by Michael Schleef and will consist of leaders of the key businesses in Germany: Guido Hebert (Markets and Securities Services), Steffen Wurm (Global Banking), Thorsten Michalik (Asset Management) and Axel Hoffmans (Private Banking). This underlines the importance of the client-focused business for the further development of HSBC Germany. In addition, it will include Chief Financial Officer Dr. Andreas Kamp, Chief Risk Officer Nikolas Speer and Chief Operating Officer Alexandra Schmidt-Mintgen.
